The Novel Coronavirus crisis in China has created a sudden huge demand for protective garments. This emergency situation has had an impact on the way these garments are sterilized. Ethylene oxide is by far the dominant sterilization technology for single use medical devices in China. However the process takes seven to fourteen days, which is too long under the present circumstances. Irradiation can reduce the lead time to one day.
中国爆发的新型冠状病毒疫情,造成医疗防护服需求激增。面临如此严峻的情况,现有防护衣物消毒灭菌方式需要做出重大调整。目前,中国主要采用环氧乙烷对医疗一次性用品进行灭菌,但其灭菌过程需要7到14天,在当前形势下过于缓慢。而辐照技术可以将灭菌过程缩短到一天。
At the request of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State Food and Drug Administration and the National Health Commission reviewed a Specifications for Radiation Sterilization of Single-use Protective Clothing for Medical Use during Emergency as a Contingency Practice drafted by our affiliate the China Isotope and Radiation Association (CIRA).

On February 7. the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Disinfection Equipment and the National Standardization Unit for Bio-Protection Products temporarily authorized the use of gamma and electron beam irradiation to replace ethylene oxide with a prescription that the irradiated products must been used within one month of the irradiation date.
